Capstone Abstracts:
English:
Through the internationalizing of the world, two things have become increasingly prevalent in today’s society. One: The desire to leave home and see the world, or “studying abroad”. The second: The need to learn new languages to become a more competitive applicant in a continuously expanding international market.
Two main ways to study a second or third, language have emerged in today’s society. One is formally in a classroom setting with rules and regulations that have been, considered and discussed at length. The second: Informally learning the language either through the personal desire of the learner, or through Study Abroad experience.
This capstone surveys prior, present, and post elements of studying abroad and those elements in regards to overcoming speaking anxiety. Students are surveyed about their social connections and how those social connects affect their overall performance in their language. My findings show the impact that study abroad has on not only language acquisition, but also a learner’s willingness to speak in their second language after studying abroad.
