JAPN 301: Intro to Advanced Personal Communication
This course further continues development of advanced proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students develop communication strategies and cultural knowledge through content-based instruction. Taught in Japanese
In order to complete MLO 1: Language and communication, in fall of 2013 I took Japanese 301: Advanced personal communications. Like the above course description states this course continues to develop advanced communication in Japanese. By looking at the MLO outcomes, this class forced us to read numerous short text which we then interpreted, and numerous times we also had to research more in depth on topics which we chose ourselves. By looking at the course outcomes, this helped us in two many different ways: The first being that we had to logically interpret Japanese text and then present on those topics. For one of my projects I chose to present about Japanese Onomatopoeia(uploaded below), which also meets part of the second MLO outcome. Through researching onomatopoeia I learned a lot about a popular cultural and interesting linguistic aspect of Japanese that is thought of as being one of the hardest parts of the language for foreign speakers to crasp. Through doing this research I think that I began to understand more about Japanese from a linguistic point of view. Before this class, I had a hard time understanding things like onomatopoeia, but while studying in this course, and the research I performed during the course I feel that I have come to understand it more.
I would personally like to learn more onomatopoeia, as I think it sounds more like native speakers rather the very tight textbook language that I speak now. Though, for me, I would just like to continue study Japanese in general and become more advanced in my language abilities. Since I’ll be returning to Japan, I do plan to further expand my Japanese, as well as the multiple topics that I developed in this course.
