Course reflection:
To meet my secondary culture requirement I took an online class called SPAN 308: History and Culture of Aztlan. This course was a fairly interesting set up, mainly because it was a usual history course that revolved around reading the textbook, and writing tons of papers, but there was also the mix of the online forum thrown in there. It was interesting to see how students opinions changed over the course of the term and how some actually turned into more radicalized, basically damning the entire span of American historical events. More me, however, I entered into the forums, most of the time, trying to start a well organized debate, were. Sadly, I was never able to start one. Through this were were supposed to learn how to compare two entire different cultures and think critically about them. ALthough my evidence for this is scarce, there were times that I was able to do this, and now understand what it means to compare cultures, and how important that actually is. I feel that studying the history of a civilization that wasn’t really all that interesting to me helped me to realize how incredibly fascinated i am in cultures and history because there were times I was enjoying reading this book and writing about what I was reading. All in all, I feel this course was very useful to my desire to learn and know as much as possible, and at some point in the future I’d like to look a little bit more at different culture and compare them to Japan’s culture. I feel that i’ll always want to look into the histories and culture of many different nations, so I feel this will help me think and learn more about the Japanese culture
