M.L.O 4: Research and Technology
Outcome Requirements:
- Students become familiar with appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply such in their studies.
- Students will use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
- Students will collect, manage and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
Courses Taken:
JAPN 400: Advanced Japanese for Interpersonal Communication (Fall 2013)
JAPN 404: Advanced Japanese for Presentational Communication
Course Reflections:
4.1
To meet this outcome I took two courses; JAPN 400: Advanced Japanese for interpersonal communications and Japanese 404: Advanced Japanese for Presentational Communication. Both courses introduced us to what it takes to not only research materials in our first language, but also what needs to be done to research and manage sources to develop our on project in our second language. I found that while most of my research was done in JAPN 400, that class developed my research abilities. This class, helped me understand how difficult creating research and survey questions is and how I need to rely not only on myself, but listen to the feedback of other as well. In JAPN 400 I look at research as a personal thing, I research topics that I was interested in, and develop primary research questions based off that research. I feel that this class was harder, in terms of interpersonal and analytical thoughts. Along with doing research we need to logically develop research questions, and primary survey questions; something that I found difficult for myself. Though, this class ultimately helped me learn and develop my research methods.
4.2
For capstone, we had to research both in our first language, and our second language. By using JSTOR, WorldCat, and Google scholar I was able to find numerous articles in both Japanese and English to use for background research on my capstone. I also contacted one of the teachers that I had in Japan, who teaches second language acquisition. I asked him if he new of any research that I could use. I think this show my fulfillment of this outcome. We performed a lot background research, using multiple different forms of technology. All the research was complied into concise passages that we used to create our capstone projects. If you refer to my capstone page I have uploaded both my Japanese capstone presentation and my English presentation. By looking at the amount of background research I performed for my research it'll be easy to see of much background research I performed for my research.
4.3
Japanese 404 was more about teaching us how to organize, analyze and discuss the research that we found for presentational purposes. Both these course strictly adhere to MLO4 because they are developing our research methods and practices. Through this class we developed continue developing our surveys, we finished and sent out our surveys, collected data analyzed that data and then created an entire presentation presenting our finding. Through these practices we learned the necessities for producing research projects, as well as handling them properly.
As I said before, these classes helped me to realize the importance of research and the organization of the research. Initially, I found JAPN 400 to be difficult because I was not performing background research to properly; thus, when it came time to develop my research questions I was unable to JAPN 400, in my opinion, is not as difficult as JAPN 400, this class was more geared toward learning the language that one writes in while preparing Japanese research papers.
